Hermit and porcelain crabs are assigned to the Anomura. The species assigned to this taxon are not true crabs (brachyurans), in fact porcelain crabs are often known as false crabs. Anomurans are distinctive in that the last pair of pereiopods (walking legs) are much smaller than the other legs. The last pair of legs is often folded under the carapace therefore giving the appearance that only three pairs of walking legs are present instead of four.
